Practice Takes Practice

Last summer, I spent a week at Backyard Art Camp with a group of amazing women. We painted paper and constructed Coptic stitch books. It was a fantastic time of slow art-making focused on daily practice.

One of my friends, Melanie Mowinski, made a letterpress card with the message Practice Takes Practice (see her work below), and we talked about this concept as a group.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the concept of Practice Takes Practice.

I love the idea that if you want to get good at something, you must do it.

If you want to be a runner, you must run.

If you want to be a writer, you must write.

If you want to be an artist, you must make art.

And, of course, I think about the topic of my obsession, Financial Forecasting. If you want to improve your relationship with your numbers, you must spend time with them.

You can’t just think about doing it. You must do it.

In my new program, the Financial Forecasting Experience, I will help you do this.

I have created a structure that will help you get up-to-date with your numbers, put them in a format that will help you understand what is going on financially in your business, and help you ask the right questions to help you meet your goals.

To have the benefits of Financial Forecasting in your business, you must make time for it.

And you don’t have to do it alone. My teacher didn’t just say, make a Coptic Stitch Book. She broke it down into steps, and we did it together. And I needed her and the other women in the circle because making a Coptic stitch book is not something I do very often.

So even though I have done it before, I'm still quite a beginner.  And it did take me to my edges.

There were moments when my eyes filled with tears.

There were moments when I had to take a break and get a cup of tea and relax.

There were moments when I had to ask for help.

There were moments when I had to breathe.

And all of that was okay because Practice Takes Practice.

And other things come up when you are practicing something new.

Practice requires a willingness to grow and learn and be patient with ourselves as we build more connections in our brains.

A willingness to be humbled by spending time in a challenging area.

A willingness to learn something new.

A willingness to show up and create a different outcome than you've had before means you'll have to confront and dismantle some belief systems.

Because I had made Coptic stitch books before, I was in the alum group. So I was under the tent with professional artists. I felt I wasn’t worthy at times.

I was having thoughts like, why am I here? Why am I doing this? I'm among these incredible women and feel like an amateur.

I had to tell myself that It’s okay to be a beginner, just like my clients are beginners when we start working together.

All of my one-on-one forecasting clients started from this place. They told me they had a lot of anxiety at the thought of looking at their numbers, and some lacked confidence in this area, creating a lack of confidence for them as business owners. And they already had thriving businesses!

So why am I telling you all this? I want you to know that just like I felt while learning to make art that challenged me, joining the Finacial Forecasting Experience may also challenge you.

And you won’t be alone. The rest of the group and I will be with you, teaching and holding you step-by-step. And you might need to take some breaths, calm yourself down, and get through the tough spots, or it might be super easy for you. Either way, it will be better together, and we will have fun doing it!

If there is a part of you who wants to spend time with your numbers and you are looking for a guided experience that meets you where you are, I would love for you to join us.
